Program overview

Existing building commissioning (EBCx) involves improving the performance of existing buildings. Over the years, there has been growing interest in EBCx projects since they are proven to be an effective means of identifying low-cost or no-cost operational improvements that can enhance occupant comfort and achieve energy savings. Such projects may be conducted as a standalone activity or as part of renovation or modernization projects.

The four-day Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) program comprehensively covers all the stages of the EBCx process. This includes planning, investigation, implementation, and hand-over monitoring. The course provides detailed presentations on each stage to enable participants to develop a comprehensive understanding of the entire process and to gain all the expected benefits. The course also covers the fundamental principles of building mechanical systems and explores effective testing and verification methods. Participants also gain a comprehensive understanding of the investigation process.

By completing this course, participants gain a thorough understanding of the EBCx process and how to sustain its benefits throughout the building life cycle. Additionally, the course emphasizes the appropriate energy monitoring interventions to be performed by third parties.

What you will learn

  • Apply the four-step EBCx process.
  • Establish effective methods for detecting problems.
  • Calculate energy and system-based savings calculations.
  • Implement EBCx measures.
  • Integrate best practices for ongoing commissioning.

Please note that this course is intended for a technical audience with prior knowledge of recommissioning concepts. If you are not familiar with these concepts and are looking for a more general course, we recommend attending the Existing Building Commissioning Essentials course instead of this one.

The course is ideal for

  • Building operators
  • Energy managers
  • Program/project managers
  • Technical supervisors
  • Engineering professionals with experience in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning as well as power systems
  • Control technicians and building automation supervisors
  • Artificial intelligence building control specialists

Eligibility criteria

We recommend prior experience of at least 5 years in design, operation and/or energy efficiency in buildings, particularly their heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, before taking this course. The final exam (which is not mandatory to take) is partly based on this experience and includes engineering calculations.

The EBCx certification does not require any education or experience. On the other hand, if you wish to become an accredited EBCx agent by Energy Transition Québec, you will have to meet certain requirements, including having passed the EBCx exam administered by CIET.

Certification process

For more information on the EBCx Agent Certification process, please visit the Remise au point des sytèmes mécaniques de bâtiments page at Transition énergétique Québec.

Important information

Recognition

Any organization wishing to carry out a EBCx project and wishing to obtain a grant from the Quebec Ministry of Energy and Natural Resources must do business only with an agent accredited in the overhaul of building mechanical systems. These officers must have completed the Natural Resources Canada advanced building refurbishment course offered by CIET, or the Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP).

Energir requires that the project be carried out by an agent accredited in the development of mechanical systems for buildings by the MERN, in particular having obtained EBCx certification, as part of its program for the rehabilitation of mechanical systems in buildings.

Your enrollment includes all presentation slides and supplemental training material to ensure your success.

Hear it from our graduates

Tony Lam, Energy Manager - Government of Yukon

Thanks to the Becoming Carbon Neutral course, I gained a better understanding of how the industry's approach to carbon neutrality is taking significant strides towards standardization, definitions, and requirements. Unfortunately, some requirements are challenging for a small northern jurisdiction like Yukon. But knowing the industry standards was tremendously helpful for figuring out where we are and where we need to be. I was able to identify areas where we already do well, pinpoint gaps, and allocate resources accordingly. The course helped me understand the overall trajectory that our organization should follow to achieve carbon neutrality.

Sean Martin, Home Inspector

The Foundation Level Exam Prep Course was very insightful, well structured and delivered, and the compilation of resources was extremely helpful. This was an exceptional training experience. Money well spent. I am glad I chose CIET for preparing the NRCan Foundation Level Exam..

Jeff Quint, Manager, Customer Solutions & Communications - Enova Power

The Becoming Carbon Neutral course helped frame the opportunities and challenges our customers and our own organization are going to face in becoming carbon neutral. It has served as a foundation, enabling our teams to better support our customers as they move through the process and be part of the solution.

Anyssa Rambali, Process Engineer - Durez Canada Company Ltd

The online CEM course was very professionally put together. The team instructors were really knowledgeable and engaging, and the exam was administered and very easy to take through proctorU.

Thivya Viswanathan, Energy Analyst - Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association

A couple of months back, I was an unemployed immigrant new graduate looking for learning opportunities to enhance my skills when one of my friends shared with me about the discounted price for the Energy Management Professional 101 (EMP) course during this pandemic. I am really happy about what CIET is doing now. You guys are impacting so many young professionals like me.

Haleigh Forbes, Manager – Efficiency Trade Network, Efficiency Nova Scotia

Working with CIET has made developing a training plan for trade allies in my network easy. The team at CIET is knowledgeable, organized and passionate about delivering quality material in their course, and they work well to deliver customizable options for all of your training needs.
