Program overview

The EBCx course materials are sourced from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and are exclusively licensed and distributed by CIET. The materials, developed by NRCan and maintained by CIET, are delivered via two programs: Existing Building Commissioning Essentials and the Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx).

Existing building commissioning (EBCx) is a term that refers to the process of testing existing facility equipment and systems to ensure they still function as designed and intended and, if not, to make the necessary adjustments. EBCx projects serve to assess how building systems operate together and identify operational improvements. Comfort issues often initiate these projects, although such projects play a critical role in evaluating system performance.

Increasing occupant comfort and satisfaction while simultaneously reducing energy operating costs is an effective approach to unlocking the true value of your building assets. It has been well-documented that the practice of EBCx reduces operating costs while improving indoor environmental quality.

The Existing Building Commissioning Essentials course provides you with a practical approach to EBCx with specific emphasis on the elements of robust investigation. This course leverages a range of real-life examples from successful projects as well as case studies from a variety of commercial and institutional building types. Additionally, it significantly emphasizes the operational effectiveness of systems, specifically heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning and control systems.

What you will learn

  • Describe the benefits of EBCx.
  • Define the need for EBCx.
  • Create a plan for EBCx implementation.
  • Establish post-implementation mechanisms to measure the success of results.

The first day of the Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) covers most of the content/concepts of the Existing Building Commissioning Essentials course. If you are attending the Advanced course, we do not recommend taking the Essentials course.

This course is ideal for

  • Building owners
  • Building managers and supervisors
  • Technical supervisors
  • Consultants
  • Energy managers
