Existing building commissioning (EBCx) is a term that refers to the process of testing existing facility equipment and systems to ensure they still function as designed and intended and, if not, to make the necessary adjustments. EBCx projects serve to assess how building systems operate together and identify operational improvements. Comfort issues often initiate these projects, although such projects play a critical role in evaluating system performance.
Increasing occupant comfort and satisfaction while simultaneously reducing energy operating costs is an effective approach to unlocking the true value of your building assets. It has been well-documented that the practice of EBCx reduces operating costs while improving indoor environmental quality.
The Existing Building Commissioning Essentials course provides you with a practical approach to EBCx with specific emphasis on the elements of robust investigation. This course leverages a range of real-life examples from successful projects as well as case studies from a variety of commercial and institutional building types. Additionally, it significantly emphasizes the operational effectiveness of systems, specifically heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning and control systems.
The first day of the Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) covers most of the content/concepts of the Existing Building Commissioning Essentials course. If you are attending the Advanced course, we do not recommend taking the Essentials course.

This four‑day Advanced EBCx course provides a comprehensive, stage‑by‑stage understanding of the existing building commissioning process—covering planning, investigation, implementation, hand‑over monitoring, mechanical system fundamentals, and effective testing and verification methods.
My background in energy efficiency was primarily at the industrial process level, so I chose to train with CIET to expand my knowledge on building energy systems. I completed the Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) as well as the two courses on Building Automation Systems. The new concepts I learned, enhanced by the knowledge of the trainers and the other participants, quickly helped me identify opportunities relating to energy, comfort, and maintenance, most often "low cost" ones.
The Becoming Carbon Neutral course helped frame the opportunities and challenges our customers and our own organization are going to face in becoming carbon neutral. It has served as a foundation, enabling our teams to better support our customers as they move through the process and be part of the solution.
