In the last three decades, CIET has established itself as a key player in energy efficiency and decarbonization training, actively contributing to the development of professional skills across Canada and internationally.
Over the years, CIET has evolved in step with technological advancements, market realities, and the needs of professionals. It has successfully adapted, innovated, and maintained a relevant and practical training program.
Its mission, however, has remained the same, provide practical tools to industry stakeholders to accelerate the energy transition.
To celebrate this milestone year, discover 30 key facts that illustrate CIET’s journey and impacts as well as the people who constitute its strength.
1. The acronym CIET stands for Canadian Institute for Energy Training.
2. In 2011, the organization reached a major milestone when it was acquired by Econoler.
3. Today, CIET has three offices — in Montreal, Quebec City, and Toronto — strengthening its pan-Canadian reach.
4. For nearly 15 years, Mathieu Côte has served as Executive Director and contributed to CIET’s continued growth.
5. Over the past three years, the team has tripled in size to meet ever-growing demand.
6. The organization also stands out for its predominantly female team and linguistic diversity. In fact, team members speak five languages.
7. Over time, the CIET brand image has evolved to reflect the transformation of the energy sector.
8. CIET is the largest Canadian organization dedicated exclusively to energy and decarbonization training and one of the most active international service providers in this field.
9. The CIET offer includes more than 45 standardized courses offered in French and English. Each year, more than 130 sessions are delivered to professionals from a wide range of sectors.
10. This offer is made possible by a network of over 45 expert trainers recognized in their fields.
11. Beyond Canada, CIET has delivered training in Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
12. In 2025, more than 6,000 professionals had chosen CIET to develop their skills, adding to the more than 45,000 participants trained over the past 30 years.
13. In 30 years, more than 6,500 have earned their Certified Energy Manager (CEM) certification.
14. In 2000, CEM training offered in Canada consisted of American materials and instructors as well as imperial units. Over the years, CIET has built a team of Canadian experts and adapted all content to the Canadian energy context.
15.CIET is the only organization to offer certification training for RETScreen Expert®.
16. CIET is also the only organization to offer the Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) developed by CanmetENERGY at Natural Resources Canada (NRCan).
17. CIET has been collaborating with the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) for over 25 years.
18. In 2024, CIET received the AEE Best Training Partner Support for Candidates award.
19. CIET’s founder, Doug Tripp, was the first Canadian inducted into the AEE Hall of Fame in 2017.
20. CIET is also NRCan’s sole licensee for the delivery of the nationwide Dollars to $ense (D2$) energy management workshops.
21. In partnership with IESO, CIET has created a podcast titled “The Energy Manager’s Playbook,” an 11-episode series whose target audience is energy professionals in Ontario.
22. Among its key energy transition projects, CIET is collaborating with the City of Toronto on the Green Will Initiative designed for large property owners. Rather than operating in isolation, CIET is integrating itself into this municipal initiative and contributing to the development of concrete strategies for some of the largest property portfolios — including universities, hospitals, and commercial buildings — to accelerate the achievement of carbon neutrality goals.
23. In 2020, to adapt to and survive the then current reality, CIET rapidly transitioned from in-person training to online training.
24. Today, a new offering is in development to enable more flexible and self-directed learning and, thereby, meet market needs. Stay tuned!
25. CIET also offers free monthly webinars in both official languages on Energy Management Systems (EMS) and 50001 Ready Canada as well as ENERGY STAR® Portfolio Manager®.
26. In 2024, CIET launched the “Ask Us Your Questions” series consisting of free monthly Q&A webinars featuring industry experts and covering topics such as carbon neutrality, heat pumps, and ISO 50001. The series already has 20 episodes!
27. In partnership with the Labour Education Centre (LEC) in Toronto, CIET developed the Green Building Operator (GBO), a 10-day program specifically designed to train refugee women and newcomers in the Greater Toronto Area in energy-efficient building operations.
28. CIET helped launch StepUp, an initiative aimed at supporting women in energy management. Thanks to the involvement of its Executive Director, Mathieu Côte, CIET played a key role in its creation, notably by providing initial financial support.
29. CIET hosts several 5@CIET events each year to promote discussions and networking within the energy community.
30. At the heart of all its initiatives, CIET’s values are rooted in a practical, collaborative approach focused on real impacts in the sector.
After 30 years, the reality is clear; energy challenges are more pressing than ever.
Organizations must adapt and, above all, be able to rely on skilled professionals capable of understanding the issues and taking action.
