What are the eligibility criteria?

The prerequisites to qualify for the certification process have been designed to take into account the possible diversity of education and practical experience an individual may have. However, each candidate must meet one of the following criteria:

CEM

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Experience
4-year degree in engineering or architecture
 OR
Professional Engineer (PE) or Registered Architect (RA)
AND 3+ years of related* work experience
4-year degree in technology, environmental science, physics, or earth science AND 4+ years of related* work experience
4-year degree in business (or related field) AND 5+ years of related* work experience
2-year energy management associate’s degree AND 6+ years of related* work experience
2-year technical associate’s degree AND 8+ years of related* work experience
NONE AND 10+ years of related* work experience

*Related degree in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or related field and related experience in energy, building or facility management, or measurement and verification.

Energy Manager in Training Option

If you do not yet meet the education or experience eligibility requirements for the CEM, but you have successfully passed the exam, you will be awarded the Energy Manager in Training (EMIT TM) certification.

CMVP

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Experience

Related* bachelor’s degree

OR

Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) or

Registered Architect (R.A.)

AND 3+ years of related* work experience
2-year associate’s degree, or 4-year unrelated bachelor’s degree AND 5+ years of related* work experience
NONE AND 10+ years of related* work experience
Current status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®)

*Related degree in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or related field and related experience in energy, building or facility management, or measurement and verification.

CEA

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Experience
4-year or Level 6 European Qualifying Framework (EQF) engineering/architectural degree*
OR
Professional Engineer (PE) or
Registered Architect (RA)
AND 3+ years of related** work experience
4-year or Level 6 EQF (non-engineering/architectural) degree* AND 4+ years of related** work experience
2-year or Level 5 EQF associate’s degree* AND 5+ years of related** work experience
None AND 10+ years of related** work experience
Current status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®)

*Or equivalent degree.
**Related experience in energy auditing and/or working on a team conducting energy assessments.

CBCP

Applicants must meet one of the following eligibility criteria:

Education   Experience

Related* bachelor’s degree

OR

Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) or

Registered Architect (R.A.)

AND 3+ years of related* work experience
2-year associate’s degree, or 4-year unrelated bachelor’s degree AND 5+ years of related* work experience
NONE AND 10+ years of related* work experience
Current status of Certified Energy Manager (CEM®)

*Related degree in science, engineering, architecture, business, law, finance, or related field and related experience in energy, building or facility management, or measurement and verification.
