Program Overview

The Building Energy Modelling Essentials course provides a perfect starting point for participants who need to understand what an energy model is, how to build a model in either eQuest or CAN-QUEST, and how to demonstrate compliance with the National Energy Code of Canada for Buildings (NECB).

This one-day course provides an overview of the requirements of the NEBC and a description of the three compliance paths (prescriptive, trade-off, and performance). During the training, participants are also taken through a case study model of a commercial building to understand what details are included in models and the factors that make an energy model successful and compliant.

eQuest and CAN-QUEST are powerful energy modelling software tools used to support the design of high-performance commercial and institutional buildings. They are also used to assess and demonstrate performance path compliance with the NECB.

Participants who have significant experience with the E-QUEST or CAN-QUEST software, or experience with energy modelling projects may want to consider the Building Energy Modelling Professional training program.

Ready to take the next step in energy modelling and compliance for buildings? Our Building Energy Modelling Professional course will give you the tools you need to execute the modelling process.

Key Learning Objectives

Upon completing this training, participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of viable NECB compliance paths.
  • Discern when energy modelling is applied and how it can help meet energy project goals.
  • Be introduced to eQuest and CAN-QUEST and be able to compare their features.
  • Understand how to produce a compliance report.
  • See how an energy model is created through case studies conducted in eQuest.
  • Review the major components of a building energy model (envelope, lighting, HVAC, service water heating, central plant) and where this information is typically found.
  • Know the role of a reference building.
  • Learn the 10 critical factors that make for a successful energy model.

Audience

  • New energy modellers.
  • Energy consultants.
  • Program administrators.
  • Compliance reviewers.
  • Code officials.
  • Those who hire energy modellers (e.g. architects).
