When it comes to professional development, you can pick and choose the ways in which you develop yourself. As we're not all the same, different development opportunities appeal to different people (of course if something doesn't appeal to you, such as networking, it might be a great opportunity to push yourself). But before you start Googling "professional development tactics", take a minute to think about yourself - your career, your strengths and weaknesses - and how that information can be valuable to your professional development strategy.
Having a good understanding of your own strengths and weaknesses can help you identify the areas you need to focus on. Find development opportunities and training to help you develop some of your weaker areas into strengths. On the flip side, understanding what your strengths and passions are can help you find opportunities as well. If you're passionate about a certain topic, you may be able to use it at a speaking engagement and work on your public speaking skills and gain exposure.
Once you understand your strengths, think about where they can be best applied to help your organisation achieve success. Just as you did for yourself, think about your organisation's strengths and weaknesses and how you can play a role in turning a weakness into an opportunity. Another part of your organisation you should understand is how it supports professional development. Start advocating for your own development by speaking with your manager about training support or upcoming roles.
If you've been making strides to improve your workplace performance, consider asking your manager for feedback. This can also help you identify other areas of development to focus on in the future.
