Professional development is all about seeking opportunities to help maximise your career. Here are 5 tips to get you started.
Understanding where you want your career to go will help you focus on areas of professional development. Think about what drives you, your ideal position, and what you need to achieve (certifications, for example) to get there.
You’re never too old to learn. Tom Clancy said it best: “Life is about learning; when you stop learning, you die”. Commit to expanding your mind by setting a learning goal. For example, dedicate yourself to one learning opportunity a month. Setting this goal will keep you focused. Get some ideas about the ways in which you can fulfill your goal below.
Commit yourself to an event which focuses on an area you’re interested in learning more about. Networking events are a great way to connect with other like-minded individuals and learn from their experiences. Alternatively, signing up for a course or workshop can provide you with some more technical knowledge you may be seeking.
There are unlimited ways you can contribute to your own professional development. The main theme is gaining knowledge and experience. You can do this by absorbing information from your favourite podcast, volunteering, networking and so much more.
Part of having goals is being able to communicate them. Speaking with your boss or manager about your professional goals is a great way to set them into motion. If your manager understanding how your success will be his or her success, they will be able to aid you. For example, signing up for a CIET workshop will provide you with important information, making you a valuable employee to your organisation. By completing a workshop, your manager now has a valuable asset on his or her team.
