Why we often fail at New Year's resolutions.

Most of us have made New Year’s resolutions…and ended up not achieving them. For good reasons, for bad reasons, we’re not here to judge.

What we think is great about resolutions, though, is the intention behind them: Self-improvement. It’s about using the new year as a reason to change for the better. Now, what doesn’t work about most resolutions? We rarely approach them the SMART way:

  • S – Specific: Clearly defined, answering what, who, where, and why.
  • M – Measurable: Progress can be tracked with metrics (numbers, data).
  • A – Achievable: Realistic and possible to accomplish.
  • R – Relevant: Aligned with broader objectives and makes sense.
  • T – Time-bound: Has a clear deadline or timeframe.

How SMART Works

To make this concrete, let’s take a common resolution, quitting smoking, and see how it fits into the SMART framework:

  SMART Element Example: Quitting Smoking
S - Specific I will quit completely smoking to improve my health and save money.
M - Measurable Track days without smoking and calculate the money saved weekly.
A - Achievable Reduce gradually over four weeks before quitting entirely.
R - Relevant Supports my goal of living a healthier lifestyle.
  T - Time-bound Quit smoking by March 31.

When we do not properly define these elements upon making a resolution, we often fail at keeping that resolution. But here’s the good news: skills development and lifelong learning fit perfectly into the SMART framework—and they deliver benefits that last far beyond January.

This can be either on a personal level, such as learning a new language, improving communication skills, or on a professional level, such as developing a particular technical skill or leadership competency. Yes, skill development requires effort and commitment, but unlike short-term habits, it creates value that can last at least as long as quitting smoking! This year, it could be about strengthening strategic and analytical skills regarding organizational digital transformations for example. What will yours be?

Be SMART and Invest in Your Development!

Every new skill becomes part of your toolkit, helping you achieve long-term goals and objectives. Whether your career takes a new direction or life throws unexpected challenges, the skills you worked hard to develop will remain yours all your life. They are adaptable, transferable, and capable of opening doors you haven’t even imagined yet (follow us, now, for more on that later this year). Just like personal resolutions become achievable when you approach them the SMART way, your professional growth becomes far more effective when approached “SMARTly”. That’s exactly where CIET and other professional educational centres fit in. Let’s take the example of a professional who wishes to develop skills in energy savings calculations using that SMART approach:

SMART Element Example: Energy Savings Calculation
S - Specific I will take measurement and verification (M&V) training to better calculate energy savings.
M - Measurable I will complete the Introduction to M&V and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional (CMVP) courses.
A - Achievable Several professionals like me completed the CMVP course and tackled the exam. Becoming a CMVP is therefore a realistic goal. I will start with the intro course in the winter and the CMVP in the fall.
R - Relevant Supports my goal of widening the projects in which I can be involved in the energy efficiency sector.
  T - Time-bound Become a CMVP by fall 2026.

Turn Resolutions into Results

At the end of the day, resolutions are about who we want to become. They’re small promises we make to ourselves, rooted in self-improvement and self-justification, long-term vision and planning, and the pride of looking back and saying: I did that and I am very proud of it.

Unlike short-lived habits, every skill you build becomes part of the individual you’re growing into. It’s an investment that never expires, never gets taken away, and always finds new ways to make your time worth investing. It will bring you opportunities you haven’t even imagined yet, long after your initial investment.

By applying the SMART approach, you turn “Someday, I should work on that” into a concrete, achievable path, and when that skill development path includes structured, industry-recognized training like CIET’s, you give yourself both the direction and the confidence to move forward with purpose.

So, this year, instead of a resolution you’ll forget by February, choose one you’ll be proud to share at the next Christmas party, and invest in both your current and future self.
