CBCP vs. Advanced EBCx

To help you excel in your career as a building commissioning professional, CIET offers a number of courses that will help you increase your skills and knowledge in commissioning and recommissioning.

Today, we’re going to take a closer look at two of the courses to help you determine which one is right for you – Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) and Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx).

But first, it’s important to understand the differences between new building commissioning, which is the focus of CBCP, and existing building commissioning, the focus on Advanced EBCx.

New Building Commissioning

Commissioning ensures that equipment is sized appropriately for the building, installed correctly, and calibrated for optimal performance and energy savings. It is an intensive quality assurance process that begins during the design of a new building and continues through construction, occupancy, and operation. 

Commissioning is ideal for: New construction or new system installation, whereas recommissioning is ideal for underperforming facilities including operational buildings that need smaller repairs, replacements, and resets.

Existing Building Commissioning

With existing building commissioning, the building owner may not realize what their facility needs until after the building has been operational for some time. EBCx is the re-optimization process for existing buildings that have already been either commissioned or retrocommissioned.

EBCx is ideal for buildings that have begun to ‘wear’ or for owners who are looking for ‘green’ energy solutions for their pre-existing mechanical systems.

Note: there is a module on existing building commissioning in the CBCP course, whereas the Advanced EBCx course doesn’t touch on new building commissioning.
