The energy efficiency sector is entering a new phase, shifting from a strategic focus to one centred on execution.

Attending NB Power’s Energizing Efficiency 2026 provided a valuable opportunity to reflect on the future direction of the Canadian energy efficiency sector and how CIET can continue to support industry needs.

From Strategy to Execution

A recurring theme that emerged across the sessions was the shift from planning to large-scale implementation. As demand-side management evolves, programs are becoming more integrated, incorporating energy efficiency, electrification, and demand response. This growing complexity underscores the need for hands-on training enabling professionals to deliver programs effectively.

Workforce development was identified as a critical priority. Many discussions highlighted a growing disparity between industry aspirations and current capabilities, affecting both new entrants to the sector and seasoned professionals navigating new technologies, standards, and program models. This suggests a clear opportunity for CIET to enhance and tailor industry-aligned training to support consistent, high-quality program delivery.

Collaboration and Capacity Building

Discussions on decarbonization also emphasized the importance of execution. Success depends not only on a robust program design, but also on a capable ecosystem comprised of skilled professionals, informed clients, and efficient processes. This further underscores the importance of accessible, real-world training that develops both technical knowledge and practical skills.

Discussions held informally during the event reinforced these themes. Industry peers shared common challenges regarding contractor capacity, client uptake, and program adaptability—areas in which targeted training and capacity building could have a direct impact.

There was also strong consensus on the importance of collaboration. Ongoing dialogue and partnerships between utilities, implementers, and training organizations are essential for addressing shared barriers and scaling up progress.

Looking Ahead

Overall, the conference confirmed clear opportunities for CIET to further enhance its training offerings and ensure they remain practical, relevant to industry needs, and closely aligned with the realities of program delivery.

The challenge ahead is not just to design better programs, but also to ensure that the industry has the ability to execute them effectively.
