With over 250 participants, the First Nations Energy Symposium brought together many representatives from the more than 130 First Nations communities in Ontario (see map below).

Taking place Toronto, November 4-5, this year's edition of the conference was focused on building capacity within First Nations communities, with sessions on the Community Energy Champion (CEC) Program, project management, evaluating your community energy plan, and transmission procurement.

CIET was also invited to speak on a session about Energy-related certification options, where the panelists were able to come to a consensus on a few key points:

  • In-person training in the First Nations communities is key
  • Training needs to be flexible and designed around a community's unique character and needs
  • Aligning educational opportunities with jobs/company projects
  • Designing educational pathways and multiple options for community members to get involved in EE
