The Certified Energy Manager (CEM) program, introduced in the US by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE) in 1981, has trained over 30,000 individuals globally. Today, there are 17,000 Certified Energy Managers worldwide.

In Canada, CIET has been the exclusive provider of AEE's CEM training since 2000, with more than 2,830 professionals completing the program. This results in Canada having 50 CEMs per million people, surpassing the US's 34 CEMs per million.

Despite these high numbers, demand for CEM training and certification continues to grow, with 2024 on track to be a record year. Midway through the year, 205 individuals have already participated in one of the seven CEM training sessions offered in English or French.

So, what’s driving this surge in demand?

Several factors stand out:

  • Accelerated Action and Investments in Energy Efficiency and Decarbonization

In the last five years, Canadian businesses, individuals, and governments have increasingly committed to decarbonization. Energy management is an essential component of these efforts, naturally boosting demand for the most recognized certification in the field, the CEM.

  • Record Numbers of New Canadians

Many immigrants move to Canada in pursuit of educational, job, or lifestyle opportunities. Many newcomers, including those with years of professional experience face challenges in securing their first job in the energy efficiency sector even after graduating from an energy management related bachelor’s or master’s program due to employers often requiring additional credentials and local experience. The CEM course supports international students and professionals in overcoming these challenges by:

  1. Establishing foundational knowledge in energy management for those transitioning their career path into the energy efficiency sector or new to this field
  2. Serving as a refresher for experienced professionals with related foreign work experience

The course provides an opportunity to learn about various building systems and equipment and teaches energy management strategies to improve energy efficiency in buildings in just 5 days, a reasonable time commitment for students, job seekers, and working professionals.  This course also empowers newcomers to make meaningful contributions to Canada’s energy efficiency goals. The energy management skills taught in the course are highly regarded by many Canadian employers, further enhancing the employability of newcomers in the sector.

Success stories like those of Thivya Viswanathan and Ahmed J Nahian highlight the program's impact:

Thivya Viswanathan moved from India and registered for CIET’s Energy Management Professional 101 course. This contributed to enhancing her energy management skills and provided her the confidence to enter the industry and, ultimately, her certification as a CEM in 2023. She now works as a Program Specialist with Alberta Ecotrust

Ahmed J Nahian, inspired by Mehmud A. Iqbal, enrolled in the CEM course shortly after arriving from Bangladesh. After passing the exam, he secured a position at Clearesult as an Associate Program Manager.

  • Strong Recognition, Financial Support, and Training Incentives from Utilities

Utilities recognize the value of having Certified Energy Managers in their regions. For instance, Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) and Enbridge offer up to a 75% discount to eligible participants. Similar support is provided by NB Power and BC Hydro, making the CEM program more accessible.

These factors, among others, are driving strong demand for the CEM in Canada. CIET expects to train a record number of CEMs before the end of the year.

How to Become a CEM

  1. Meet the Eligibility Requirements

To qualify, you need to meet specific education and experience criteria set by the AEE:

  • A four-year degree in engineering or a related field plus three years of experience in energy management.
  • A four-year unrelated degree plus four years of experience.
  • A two-year technical degree plus five years of experience.
  • Ten years of verified experience in energy management.
  1. Complete the Required Training

CIET offers a comprehensive five-day CEM training program covering topics such as energy efficiency, auditing, HVAC systems, and industrial systems.

  1. Prepare for the CEM Exam

The CEM exam is rigorous. Utilize the study guides and practice exams provided during training, focusing on areas like lighting systems, building automation, and energy procurement.

  1. Apply for the CEM Exam

Submit an application form to the AEE, including documentation of your education and work experience, and pay the exam fee.

  1. Take the CEM Exam

The exam, lasting four hours, includes multiple-choice and open-ended questions. It can be taken at various locations across Canada or online. A minimum score of 70% is required to pass.

  1. Maintain Your Certification

CEM certification is valid for three years. To maintain it, earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs) through professional development activities and submit a renewal application with a fee.

Additional Tips for Success

  • Networking: Join professional associations like AEE or local energy management groups to stay updated on industry trends and opportunities.
  • Professional Development: Regularly attend workshops, seminars, and conferences related to energy management to enhance your skills and knowledge.
