Energy efficiency practices can help your company save, but what about your home? A lot of habits we take to the workplace are developed at home. Here are some good strategies to get your home ready for Summer and to help save energy and lower your energy bills.

1. All Winter we’re counting down the days until the Summer heat is here, but once it arrives, most people turn up the A.C. to stay cool. If this is the case in your home, try turning the A.C off a night and opening your windows. The night’s cool air should do the trick while you’re sleeping.

2. Alternatively, programming your thermostat to cool efficiently can help reduce your energy consumption. The closer your thermostat is set to the outdoor temperature, the less energy it will use.

3. Taking a much-needed Summer vacation? There’s no need to cool your house while you’re away. Set your thermostat at a warmer temperature so you use less energy while you’re enjoying your time away.

4. Keep the lights off. This is one of the easiest habits you can form. Turn the light off when you leave a room, and during the daytime only turn the lights on when you need them (not just out of habit when walking into a room). Less lighting means less energy consumption. Plus lighting your home efficiently will put off less heat in your home, meaning your A.C. won’t have to work as hard to cool your home.

5. Insulated windows and effective window coverings will help keep the hot air outside. Check your doors and windows for any air leaks and repair any cracks. You can take it one step further and install window coverings for the Summer months which will shade your windows and shield your home from the heat.

6. Before we get into the dog days of Summer, check that your air conditioner is running efficiently. A maintenance check-up is a good habit to ensure your cooling system is running smoothly, which includes checking and/or replacing the furnace filter.

7. Having efficient appliances can make a difference in your energy bills in two ways:
i) They run more efficiently, using less energy to operate.
ii) Running efficiently means they put off less heat. Which means your A.C. doesn’t have to go into overdrive to keep your house cool. ENERGY STAR® products are the best energy performers on the market certified for being energy efficient. For example and ENERGY STAR® certified ceiling fan can be a good substitution for A.C. in the Summer months.
