Program overview

A properly operated building automation system (BAS) reduces energy consumption and allows for more efficient building system operations. This enables building managers to increase tenant comfort while reducing operating costs.

During this one-day Building Automation Systems Essentials course, participants examine the basics of building systems and energy conservation strategies. This empowers participants to efficiently and effectively operate a BAS regardless of which system is used.

Whether they are building operators, project managers, or technicians, participants improve their understanding of a BAS through the BAS Essentials course by examining the most important components, including protocols, controls, control strategies, scheduling, set points, resets, maintenance, recommissioning, and commissioning.

After completing the Building Automation Systems Essentials course (or if you are already an experienced BAS operator or specialist looking to get more out of your system), register for the Advanced Building Automation Systems Optimization course. The advanced course is focused on control strategies and design to generate further results in your building.

What you will learn

  • Develop energy conservation plans and how various projects generate energy savings
  • Optimize an already existing BAS
  • Calibrate a BAS
  • Discern the core design specifications of a BAS
  • Identify opportunities to optimize a BAS
  • Define the relationship between heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC), a BAS, and key control strategies
  • Recognize the importance of identifying and following trends
  • Explore the benefits of scheduling
  • Analyze the calibration process

This course is ideal for

  • Building operators
  • Technicians
  • Project managers
  • Consulting engineers

Hear it from our graduates

Aaron Wouters, Energy Manager – Trillium Health Partners

CIET provides the BEST example of how program certification information should be provided. Its personal, with dates relevant to me and my timelines, and also communicates future events.

Tony Lam, Energy Manager - Government of Yukon

Thanks to the Becoming Carbon Neutral course, I gained a better understanding of how the industry's approach to carbon neutrality is taking significant strides towards standardization, definitions, and requirements. Unfortunately, some requirements are challenging for a small northern jurisdiction like Yukon. But knowing the industry standards was tremendously helpful for figuring out where we are and where we need to be. I was able to identify areas where we already do well, pinpoint gaps, and allocate resources accordingly. The course helped me understand the overall trajectory that our organization should follow to achieve carbon neutrality.

Sean Martin, Home Inspector

The Foundation Level Exam Prep Course was very insightful, well structured and delivered, and the compilation of resources was extremely helpful. This was an exceptional training experience. Money well spent. I am glad I chose CIET for preparing the NRCan Foundation Level Exam.

Jeff Quint, Manager, Customer Solutions & Communications - Enova Power

The Becoming Carbon Neutral course helped frame the opportunities and challenges our customers and our own organization are going to face in becoming carbon neutral. It has served as a foundation, enabling our teams to better support our customers as they move through the process and be part of the solution.

Leo Glaser, Energy Analyst – Operational Excellence, Quadreal Property Group

In our experience, CIET courses deliver a great foundation for all energy professionals—at any stage of their career or experience level. We were very satisfied with the facilitation and received positive feedback from QuadReal participants. It is a pleasure to work with CIET.

Jeff Quint, Manager, Customer Solutions & Communications - Enova Power

Pierre-Francis Parent, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Consultant - Planéco Énergie

My background in energy efficiency was primarily at the industrial process level, so I chose to train with CIET to expand my knowledge on building energy systems. I completed the Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) as well as the two courses on Building Automation Systems. The new concepts I learned, enhanced by the knowledge of the trainers and the other participants, quickly helped me identify opportunities relating to energy, comfort, and maintenance, most often "low cost" ones.
