Program overview

Measurement and verification (M&V) is the process of using measurements to determine the actual energy savings generated by energy management projects at individual sites. Common M&V activities include metering, data collection and processing, transparent savings calculations, monitoring, quality assurance, and third-party report verifications.

The two-day Advanced Measurement and Verification training program provides practical exercises and advanced concepts to individuals seeking to enhance their understanding of M&V. This program is a valuable complement to the theoretical knowledge acquired through common M&V certification courses and designations.

  • Day one serves to review the primary features of M&V and concentrate on the utilization of diverse statistical tools to create M&V plans, including samples, linear regressions such as multivariable regressions, and uncertainty calculations.
  • Day two serves to explore practical examples of International Performance Measurement and Verification Protocol (IPMVP) options for lighting, motors and variable speed drives, compressed air systems, heat recovery systems, and commercial buildings. Participants also conduct calculations for those scenarios. Day two culminates in the development of an M&V plan.

What you will learn

  • Use statistical tools for developing M&V plans.
  • Strengthen your understanding of regression.
  • Perform calculations on several case studies.
  • Develop an M&V plan.

This course is ideal for

  • Building owners and stakeholders who wish to measure energy savings generated by their projects
  • Building owners and stakeholders who wish to partner with energy service companies (ESCOs) to implement energy efficiency (EE) projects
  • Administrators of public programs involving M&V
  • Evaluators of EE programs
  • Engineering firm employees
  • ESCO employees

You'll walk away with

This course offers comprehensive coverage of statistical tools, examples, and case studies to enhance your expertise in the M&V process and the preparation and interpretation of M&V plans.

  • Hydro‑Québec now incorporates recognized competency requirements into its Energy Management System (EMS) program, notably requiring advanced training in Measurement and Verification (M&V) for professionals responsible for energy savings reports.

Hear it from our graduates

Anyssa Rambali, Process Engineer - Durez Canada Company Ltd

The online CEM course was very professionally put together. The team instructors were really knowledgeable and engaging, and the exam was administered and very easy to take through proctorU.

Leo Glaser, Energy Analyst – Operational Excellence, Quadreal Property Group

In our experience, CIET courses deliver a great foundation for all energy professionals—at any stage of their career or experience level. We were very satisfied with the facilitation and received positive feedback from QuadReal participants. It is a pleasure to work with CIET.

Aaron Wouters, Energy Manager – Trillium Health Partners

CIET provides the BEST example of how program certification information should be provided. Its personal, with dates relevant to me and my timelines, and also communicates future events.

Jeff Quint, Manager, Customer Solutions & Communications - Enova Power

The Becoming Carbon Neutral course helped frame the opportunities and challenges our customers and our own organization are going to face in becoming carbon neutral. It has served as a foundation, enabling our teams to better support our customers as they move through the process and be part of the solution.

Tony Lam, Energy Manager - Government of Yukon

Thanks to the Becoming Carbon Neutral course, I gained a better understanding of how the industry's approach to carbon neutrality is taking significant strides towards standardization, definitions, and requirements. Unfortunately, some requirements are challenging for a small northern jurisdiction like Yukon. But knowing the industry standards was tremendously helpful for figuring out where we are and where we need to be. I was able to identify areas where we already do well, pinpoint gaps, and allocate resources accordingly. The course helped me understand the overall trajectory that our organization should follow to achieve carbon neutrality.

Haleigh Forbes, Manager – Efficiency Trade Network, Efficiency Nova Scotia

Working with CIET has made developing a training plan for trade allies in my network easy. The team at CIET is knowledgeable, organized and passionate about delivering quality material in their course, and they work well to deliver customizable options for all of your training needs.

We have had great success with the NRCan Foundation Level Exam Exam Prep course and the Making the Case for Energy Management Projects. We look forward to offering more training programs to our trade allies.

Thivya Viswanathan, Energy Analyst - Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association

A couple of months back, I was an unemployed immigrant new graduate looking for learning opportunities to enhance my skills when one of my friends shared with me about the discounted price for the Energy Management Professional 101 (EMP) course during this pandemic. I am really happy about what CIET is doing now. You guys are impacting so many young professionals like me.
