An energy auditor evaluates and analyzes how energy is being used in a commercial or institutional facility, identifies energy conservation opportunities, and makes recommendations on where consumption can be reduced or optimized. There are three main types of energy audits: Level 1 audits (walkthrough surveys that allow you to rapidly identify opportunities for energy savings); Level 2 audits (energy survey analyses that are commonly used in commercial buildings); and Level 3 audits (detailed analyses of capital-intensive modifications).
The four-day Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) program provides participants with the fundamental knowledge needed to evaluate how energy is being used in a facility and identify where consumption can be reduced. Additionally, it covers useful calculation methodologies through practical examples and peer exercises.
This is the right course for you if you are or will be involved in commercial building audits and want to expand your knowledge of the complete energy auditing and reporting process. The course also prepares you to challenge the exam and earn the CEA credential.

NOTE: The Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) certification program focuses on audits for commercial and industrial buildings only and does not qualify participants to perform residential audits. The CEA certification is issued by the Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), and the program is based on ASHRAE standards. CIET’s CEA training program does not cover the residential sector and thus not prepare you to become an accredited NRCan Residential Energy Advisor. Clint is currently a consultant and instructor providing optimization services for industrial, commercial and institutional customers. He previously served as Senior Buildings Engineer for Pacific Northwest National Laboratories, Senior Energy Engineer with NORESCO, Inc., and the Director of Advanced Solutions for Johnson Controls, Inc. Clint served as the Director of Oklahoma State University's Industrial Assessment Center while pursuing a Ph.D. His broad experience in energy management has included the conducting of over 150 industrial, commercial, and institutional energy surveys over 20 years. He has published widely in the energy field, and made numerous presentations at national and international conferences.

If you don't yet meet the education or experience eligibility requirements for the CEA, but successfully pass the exam, you will be awarded the Certified Energy Auditor in Training (CEAITTM) certification.
The CEA is an acceptable certification allowing professionals to verify building energy use data under Ontario’s Reporting of Energy Consumption and Water Use Regulation.
All CEA candidates must complete the Certified Energy Auditor 4-day Training Program. After completing your seminar registration, go to STEP TWO below.
A specific link will be given to you through your registration email in order to access our certification platform. There you will be able to complete all required fields and submit your application to us.
The open book CEA exam will be administered remotely. You will have a period of at least two weeks to schedule your exam with Proctor U. This allows for great flexibility in finding a suitable time for you. You will receive all instructions in the week prior to the course. Please wait to receive your official Proctor U invitation email in order to book your exam date and time. No other action is required from you regarding Proctor U at this time.In the meantime, you will find the information needed to conduct the exam by consulting the ProctorU Guidelines.

Should you wish to reschedule your exam under another cohort, you may do so yourself through the same link remitted by Proctor U, however you must reschedule no later than 72 hours before your scheduled exam time.
Should you wish to postpone the exam to the next session, there is a $150 + tax penalty fee unless you demonstrate medical proof.
You should expect to receive your exam results by email within 60 days of taking the exam. If you have successfully passed the exam and your candidacy has been approved by the certification board, you should expect to receive your certificate by mail within 45 days of receiving your exam results. If you failed the exam, you would have the possibility to retake it after at least 60 days of the original examination date.
Your CEA Application form must be submited before your score can be released. Please do not call CIET about your test results before the end this outlined delay period.
You must contact CIET at info@cietcanada.com to register for your exam retake. The costs are the following: $150 plus taxes.
If you receive a passing score and have submitted your CEA Application form, and if your file is complete including all supporting documents, your file will be sent to the Certification Board for final review. You will be notified at that time that you will receive the Board's approval or denial within sixty days.
A Certified Energy Auditor (CEA) may use the designation with name on organization letterhead, business cards, and all forms of address. Certification is for individuals only. The CEA designation may not be used to imply that an organization or firm is certified.
Your completed application must be received 3 weeks prior to date of the examination for which you wish to sit in order to guarantee that you are pre-registered for the examination. After this date, you may be required to complete a waiver on-site if your name is not pre-registered.
Upon completion of the official CEA title, a CEA must accumulate ten professional continuing education units (10 CEU's) every three years at a cost of US $300 (converted into Canadian dollars) and submit a completed Renewal Form to the Certification Renewal Director to remain certified. CEA renewal notices are mailed in the 3rd year of certification six months prior to the expiration date, which falls on December 31 of that year.
