Ian is a Building Engineer with a Master of Applied Science in Building Control Systems and Energy Recovery. He has over 34 years of overall experience, including 10 years in the manufacturing sector designing, putting into production and commissioning Energy Recovery air handling units in the field and the remaining over 24 years in  the commissioning, recommissioning, and diagnostics of various types of new and existing buildings, including hospitals, laboratories, data centers, commercial, institutional, multi-residential and schools, industrial, museums, etc. He has acquired vast and broad experience with a plethora of mechanical building systems including all types of ventilation systems, hydronic systems, central plant heating and cooling installations, geothermal heat pumps, solar collectors, and building automation and control systems.  Due to his extensive experience and professionalism, he has worked as expert witness on very large and high-profile projects, leading to legal victories due to his thorough analysis and presentation.  He has worked on committees for developing CSA Commissioning Standards, Z-320. He has successfully delivered numerous workshops for the D2$ program since 2009 (12 workshops, and in the past 3 years, he has delivered approximately 50 workshops, including the Advanced Existing Building Commissioning course and the Certified Building Commissiong Professional (CBCP) as one of only two trainers for all of Canada. He has also developed and modified workshop content and presentations. 

Simon Kattoura

Simon has 25 years of engineering experience in building mechanics, project management, sustainability, and energy efficiency.

Simon recently founded and is running Econology inc., a consulting firm specialized in energy solutions and sustainable development, after 25 years of industry experience in different technical and managerial roles.

In his latest role of Vice President of Sales & Engineering at Kolostat, a mechanical contractor leader in Design & Build, Simon has developed several expertise including, among others, green buildings design, energy optimization of mechanical concepts, optimization of grants & incentives related to energy efficiency, energy simulation for LEED or other certification purposes, and life cycle cost studies. He has completed/supervised over 300 energy models and audits for implemented projects that have been eligible for over $35M in grants & incentives and have generated over $7.5M in annual energy cost savings.

During his career, Simon conducted several feasibility studies for energy retrofit projects with or without performance guarantees. He developed measurement & verification plans and managed a portfolio of performance guaranteed projects for three years at Honeywell. He was involved in the design and installation of several major green projects that were decorated by ASHRAE Technology Awards and Energia Awards. The latest ASHRAE Technology Award won by Simon in 2023 was a first place at the society level for Hood Packaging project in the light industrial sector.
