Overview

This course is presented in partnership with Energy Efficiency Alberta. Energy Efficiency Alberta covers 50% of the course fees for residents of Alberta. (The prices announced are already discounted.)

The Building Operator Certification Training (BOC®) is eight modules rolled out over a nine-day skills based training which affords facility personnel improved job skills and knowledge to transform workplaces into more comfortable, energy-efficient and environmentally friendly environments.

 

Each course consists of highly interactive and hands-on classroom training facilitated by very knowledgeable and experienced building professionals. Project assignments are to be completed at the participant’s facility, and an in-class test is administered at the end of each day of training.

 

Building operators are responsible for day-to-day maintenance and operation of large buildings with complex heating, mechanical and electrical systems, which offer excellent opportunity for significant energy savings. You and your company can do a lot to ensure that your buildings operate as energy-efficiently as possible: increase tenant comfort; save money; and reduce your environmental footprint.

YOUR CERTIFICATION OPTIONS

  1. Building Operator Training Certificate of Completion (COC)

    Through the 9 training days, participants complete 9 tests as well as 5 short project assignments. When successful, they receive a Certificate of Completion (COC) which is recognized by the market and, notably, eligible to IESO’s training incentive.

  2. Optional Certified Building Operator (CBO) Certification

    In 2018, the Northwest Energy Efficiency Council (NEEC) will be aligning its BOC program with the ISO 17024:2012 Standard (Conformity assessment -- General requirements for bodies operating certification of persons). This change includes the addition of the Certified Building Operator (CBO), a stackable certification, on top of the Certification of Completion. The optional CBO exam takes place at a remote examination center after the course is completed once exam applications have been reviewed, and costs US$285 paid directly to NEEC. Upon successfully passing the exam, candidates earn the CBO certification. The Certification Exam is a three-hour computer-based exam addressing topics covered in the BOC training and is comprised of 100 multiple choice questions.

Class Outline

 

DAY 1: Introduction to the whole building system concept and how components interact with each other, with the building, its occupants, and the environment. Energy efficient operations and maintenance, thermal comfort theory, heat transfer, air movement, and air systems are reviewed.

DAY 2: Focuses on troubleshooting and optimization approaches for heating and cooling units, systematic diagnostic procedures, and determination of repair needs.

Day 3: Participants will learn how to perform quantifiable evaluations of their facilities’ energy use in order to be able to target prospects for energy conservation. Day 4: Participants will learn lighting fundamentals and principles of efficient lighting including: evaluation of lighting levels; fixture and control technologies; retrofit and redesign options; and required maintenance to reduce energy use associated with lighting while maintaining recommended lighting levels needed for productivity and safety.

DAY 5: Participants will learn the fundamentals of automatic control systems for building mechanical systems to target possible inefficiencies in their HVAC systems and to evaluate potential problems as part of an enhanced operation and maintenance program. Participants will be introduced to Building Automation Systems (BAS) and the graphic user interface as a cost effective tool to review real time building data, identify problems, and verify proper performance for air handling and central plant systems.

DAY 6: Participants will learn about the causes of indoor environmental quality (IEQ) problems and the relationships between cause, control, occupant sensitivity, and ventilation in order to develop a reliable method of diagnosis and remediation.

DAY 8: Participants will learn basic electrical theory, safety procedures, power distribution, and energy conservation to develop a practical understanding of electricity and its use in commercial facilities. Participants will learn basic troubleshooting in order to effectively work with licensed staff and/or contractors with ongoing electrical problems and maintenance support.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

FOR BUILDING OPERATOR TRAINING CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION (COC)

BOC training is for building operators with two or more years experience in building operation and maintenance, who wish to broaden their knowledge of the total building system. Past participants have included building engineers, stationary engineers, maintenance supervisors, maintenance workers, facility coordinators, HVAC technicians, electricians, operations supervisors, operations techs, and others in the facility operation and maintenance field.

 

Eligibility for the Training Certificate of Completion is based on work experience and education, AND completion of BOC classes, tests and on-the-job projects.

 

It is highly recommended that applicants for certification have a high school diploma or GED, and must have one of the following:

  • two or more years of experience working in operations and maintenance of a commercial or institutional facility,

OR

  • a minimum of one year of experience working in operations and maintenance of a commercial or institutional facility AND one year of technical college level education in facilities engineering related program,

OR

  • two or more years of experience in energy management of facilities with a focus on operations and maintenance.

FOR CERTIFIED BUILDING OPERATOR CERTIFICATION (CBO)

BOC Certification is for building operators who have completed the BOC training or an equivalent training program. Applicants wishing to get their BOC Certification and become a Certified Building Operator (CBO) must pass the Certification Exam. To qualify for the exam, you must meet the following eligibility requirements and you must submit documentation of education and training experience.

 

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

  1. High School Diploma or equivalent degree
  2. Completion of BOC training or equivalent training program

In addition to meeting the mandatory requirements, applicants for the Certification Exam must meet one of the following minimum education and experience requirements.

 * Experience in building operations and maintenance is defined as maintaining the building’s operability, optimizing building performance, and ensuring the comfort, productivity and safety of the building occupants.

 

** Energy management experience is defined as participating in an energy-related project for a commercial or institutional building. Energy-related project is a project implemented to optimize energy use or cost. (Department of Energy Building Operations Professional Scheme, 2014) or completion of activities concerned with finding and maintaining the balance between building system performance, resource use, indoor environmental quality and operational or maintenance costs.

CERTIFICATION PROCESS

In order to earn the BOC Certification and become a Certified Building Operator (CBO), you must pass a comprehensive exam. The exam takes place after the course is completed and exam applications have been reviewed.

 

Participants who opt not to challenge the CBO exam or who are unsuccessful at it still receive a recognized Certificate of Completion of the 9-day training and tests.

 

WHAT IS THE CERTIFICATION EXAM?

The Certification Exam is a 3 hour test addressing topics covered in the course training. You must score 67% to pass.

If you are unable to attend the course, you may substitute another person in your place without penalty. All cancellations or postponements must be communicated to CIET by email at info@cietcanada.com.

  • Registrations cancelled more than 4 weeks prior to the course starting date: no penalty.
  • Registrations cancelled between 2 and 4 weeks prior to the course starting date will be assessed a $200 administration fee.
  • Registrations cancelled 2 weeks or less prior to the course starting date will be assessed 50% of the registration fee.
