Overview

Optional Special Exam Prep/Coaching session of this Certified Energy Manager (CEM®) course will be held following the conclusion of the course on Monday, March 13, and Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at 10:00 to 11:30 CST. This session will be based on the following:
  • review of sample questions;
  • exercises that would help participants gage their test processing time/skill;
  • presentation of extra practice material;
  • poll questions to ensure retention are key concepts (ex: heating value; NPR calculations).

Spots are limited to 10 and enrollment will happen on first-come-first-served basis.

The comprehensive five-day CEM training is ideal for professionals who seek a thorough program that covers the technical, economic, and regulatory aspects of effective energy management. Additionally, the course has recently been improved to include: 

  • Tips and tricks on how to use the RETScreen Expert Clean Energy Management software to apply lessons learned as well as a free 90-day subscription to RETScreen Expert.
  • A number of case studies and peer exercises covering topics such as M&V solutions, heat recovery, distributed energy resources (DERs), and more.
  • An extra Q&A session at the conclusion of each day of the CEM course, whereby our instructors are available to answer any questions you may have on the study materials or on any aspect of the day’s modules.

Ed Rubinstein

Ed Rubinstein is the Energy & Environment Manager at the University Health Network. He’s been leading the hospital’s many environmental programs since 1999 and has helped UHN become a leader in greening health care.

Both UHN and Ed’s leadership in the field of “greening health care” have been recognized by several awards, including from the Ontario Hospital Association, Natural Resources Canada, Practice Greenhealth, and the Canadian Council of Ministers for the Environment.

Eric Mazzi

Dr. Eric Mazzi has over 25 years of experience in applied engineering practice, policy research, and teaching for energy systems. His professional experiences include aerospace engineering, combustion, and air pollution consulting, energy utility operation and maintenance, and industrial energy management. He was the Power SmartTM Instructor in UBC’s Master of Engineering Clean Energy program from 2009-2014 and is currently an Adjunct Professor of Energy Management at the New York Institute of Technology. Dr. Mazzi has taught energy efficiency and conservation, thermal systems engineering, fluid mechanics, human behavior change, and supervised over 100 Masters of Engineering projects on a variety of topics. He has completed due diligence technical review and measurement & verification (M&V) on many electric and thermal energy projects for industrial plants and buildings.

Dr. Mazzi holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in mechanical engineering, and a doctorate degree in resources and environment. He is a registered professional engineer in British Columbia and California. He completed a doctoral training fellowship in UBC’s Bridge program, a one-year teaching fellowship in UBC’s University Sustainability Initiative, and was formerly a Research Collaborator in UBC’s Sustainable Building Science Program. Dr. Mazzi is a Certified Energy Manager (CEM) and Certified M&V Professional (CMVP). He is an active member of the IPMVP committee and the Statistics/Uncertainty sub-committee (www.evo-world.org).

Emily Thorn Corthay

Emily is a Professional Engineer, Certified Energy Manager and Certified Measurement and Verification Professional with a Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering and over fifteen years of energy engineering as well as people and project management.  Emily is President of Thorn Associates, an energy and carbon management consulting corporation, and past Director of Energy Optimization and Management at Hatch Ltd., a 10,000 employee international engineering consulting firm. In addition, Emily is an elected Director of the Board and Chair of the Ontario Society of Professional Engineers (OSPE’s) Energy Task Force as well as a member of OSPE’s Audit & Finance committee.   

A Laureate of the RelèveTO Young Professional Award, Emily has acted as project manager, technical reviewer and energy engineer for over 70 industrial energy projects, including energy audits, energy design reviews, energy efficiency improvement projects, energy management information system studies and implementation. Emily was also a team member for Canada’s first pilot program aimed at helping companies achieve the ISO 50001 energy management standard. She began her career with five years in the fuel cell industry.

Eligibility Criteria

The prerequisites to qualify for the certification process have been designed to take into account the possible diversity of education and practical experience an individual may have. However each CEM candidate must meet one of the following criteria:

Education   Experience
4-year degree in engineering or architecture
OR
Professional Engineer or Registered Architect
AND 3+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
4-year degree in technology, environmental science, physics, or earth science AND 4+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
4-year degree in business (or related field), or
a 3-year advanced diploma along with a CET designation
AND 5+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
2-year energy management associate’s degree AND 6+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
2-year technical associate’s degree AND 8+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management
NONE AND 10+ years of experience in energy engineering or energy management

 

Energy Manager in Training Option

If you don’t yet meet the education or experience eligibility requirements for the CEM, but successfully pass the exam, you will be awarded the Energy Manager in Training (EMIT TM) certification.

The CEM certification is recognized, required and otherwise supported in numerous public and private entities. In Canada, the CEM is frequently listed as a key qualification on job announcements, but is most notably recognized in the following ways:

Certification Process

STEP ONE: REGISTER FOR THE SEMINAR

All CEM candidates must complete the Certified Energy Manager 5-day Training Program. After completing your seminar registration, go to STEP TWO below.

STEP TWO: COMPLETE YOUR CEM CERTIFICATION APPLICATION

  • A specific link will be given to you through your registration email in order to access our certification platform. There you will be able to complete all required fields and submit your application to us.

  • The open book CEM exam will be administered remotely. You will have a period of two weeks to schedule your exam with Proctor U after finishing the course. This allows for great flexibility in finding a suitable time for you. You will receive all instructions the week prior to the course. Please wait to receive your official Proctor U invitation email in order to book your exam date and time. No other action is required from you regarding Proctor U at this time. In the meantime, you will find the information needed to conduct the exam by consulting the ProctorU Guidelines.

Exam postponement and rescheduling requests policy

Should you wish to reschedule your exam under another cohort, you may do so yourself through the same link remitted by Proctor U, however you must reschedule no later than 72 hours before your scheduled exam time.

Should you wish to postpone the exam to the next session, there is a $150 + tax penalty fee unless you demonstrate medical proof. Please note that if you choose to change your registration from taking the course and exam registration to taking the course only registration, and have already received your Proctor U exam link, CIET will charge you the full exam fee of $525 if you choose to take the exam nevertheless.

Notification of Exam Results

You should expect to receive your exam results by email within 60 days of taking the exam. If you have successfully passed the exam and your candidacy has been approved by the certification board, you should expect to receive your certificate by mail within 45 days of receiving your exam results. If you failed the exam, you would have the possibility to retake it after at least 60 days of the original examination date.
Your CEM Application form must be submitted before your score can be released. Please do not call CIET about your test results before the end of this outlined delay period.

Rewrite exam requests

You must contact CIET at info@cietcanada.com to register for your exam retake. The costs are the following: $150 plus taxes.

Review by Certification Board

If you receive a passing score and have submitted your CEM Application form, your file will be sent to the Certification Board for final review. We will only contact you if additional information is requested.

Use of CEM Designation

A Certified Energy Manager (CEM) may use the designation with name on organization letterhead, business cards, and all forms of address. Certification is for individuals only. The CEM designation may not be used to imply that an organization or firm is certified.

Application Deadlines

Your completed application must be received at least 5 days prior to the start date of your course or exam retake cohort to avoid delays in your certification process.

Maintaining Certification

The continuing education of Energy Managers is essential to cope with the rapidly changing field of energy management. Upon completion of the official CEM title, a CEM must accumulate ten professional continuing education units (10 CEU’s) every three years at a cost of US $300 (converted into Canadian dollars) and submit a completed Renewal Form to the Certification Renewal Director to remain certified. CEM renewal notices are mailed in the 3rd year of certification six months prior to the expiration date, which falls on December 31 of that year.
