Overview

Building energy modelling is a key process used in the retrofit design, code compliance, and real-time building control for commercial and institutional buildings. The modelling process permits modellers to include factors such as building performance, climate, construction materials, architectural design, HVAC, and building analysis.

This two-day course is divided into two parts. Day 1 is focused on key tools and data used in prominent modelling software (specifically eQuest and Can-Quest). During the first day, we also run basic simulations and create a compliance run. Day 2 provides interactive, hands-on examples of modelling case studies that participants work through and complete with coaching and assistance from our instructor.

The Building Energy Modelling Professional course provides you with the tools you need to execute energy modelling projects and achieve compliance for buildings. You will also benefit from completing case studies that will reinforce your knowledge and understanding of energy modelling.

Key Learning Objectives

Upon completing this training program, participants will be able to:

  • Prepare an energy model
  • Set up preliminary models (via the Wizard tool)
  • Know how to input building performance factors and design elements into a model
  • Ensure accurate modelling with the use of the Detailed Mode feature
  • Understand reporting and calculations methodologies
  • Be comfortable using either eQuest or Can-Quest as a compliance tool

Agenda

DAY 1

  • Setting up an energy model in CanQuest or eQuest: Project and site data (building type, location, seasons); shells and zoning (building shells, 3D-viewer, zoning principles, space types, importing custom footprints and zoning)
  • Running a simulation
  • Identifying important files
Using a detailed interface: Execute the energy model; create schedules in CAN-QUEST; envelopes (building up walls, roofs, windows, and floors, below-grade construction and reference building envelopes); internal loads (lighting and equipment); water-side HVAC (loops, boilers, chillers, heat rejection, pumps, controls, reference buildings); air-side HVAC (system basics, fans, outdoor air, cooling, heating)
  • Verifying the results of a simulation
  • Creating a compliance run

DAY 2

  • Participating in case study work with coaching and assistance from our instructor.
