Program overview

Strategic energy management (SEM) is a specialized field of energy efficiency that consists of systematically understanding, controlling, and thereby reducing organizations’ energy consumption and demand along with correlated expenses and greenhouse gas emissions over time. The approach involves understanding and addressing gaps in areas such as energy and climate policies, human resource capacity, energy efficiency project development practices, monitoring and reporting systems, as well as financial resource allocations. Without a strategic approach, organizations may attempt to address energy efficiency on a piecemeal, project-by-project basis, thus resulting in unclear outcomes and unsustainable energy and demand reductions. SEM enables organizations to adopt a stable, controlled, and predictable continuous improvement cycle.

The Strategic Energy Management 101 (SEM 101) course delivers multiple modules over two days. Each module entails a comprehensive presentation of concepts supported by engaging exercises and useful SEM tools, including templates and worksheets, as follows:

  • Day one serves to emphasize an organization’s energy management strategy, assess its capacity, and address gaps in planning, financial resource allocations, and communication.
  • Day two is focused on identifying and prioritizing energy efficiency initiatives, developing energy efficiency projects, and reporting on progress.

Organizations that adopt SEM principles have demonstrated the ability to achieve annual energy and cost reductions of up to 5% in their portfolios. This two-day course will empower your organization with the knowledge and skills to master SEM. Participants learn how to develop a winning energy management strategy, set and communicate clear energy management goals, and systematically reduce energy consumption to meet climate objectives.

Hear it from our graduates

Tony Lam, Energy Manager - Government of Yukon

Thanks to the Becoming Carbon Neutral course, I gained a better understanding of how the industry's approach to carbon neutrality is taking significant strides towards standardization, definitions, and requirements. Unfortunately, some requirements are challenging for a small northern jurisdiction like Yukon. But knowing the industry standards was tremendously helpful for figuring out where we are and where we need to be. I was able to identify areas where we already do well, pinpoint gaps, and allocate resources accordingly. The course helped me understand the overall trajectory that our organization should follow to achieve carbon neutrality.

Pierre-Francis Parent, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Consultant - Planéco Énergie

My background in energy efficiency was primarily at the industrial process level, so I chose to train with CIET to expand my knowledge on building energy systems. I completed the Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) as well as the two courses on Building Automation Systems. The new concepts I learned, enhanced by the knowledge of the trainers and the other participants, quickly helped me identify opportunities relating to energy, comfort, and maintenance, most often "low cost" ones.

Thivya Viswanathan, Energy Analyst - Thompson Okanagan Tourism Association

A couple of months back, I was an unemployed immigrant new graduate looking for learning opportunities to enhance my skills when one of my friends shared with me about the discounted price for the Energy Management Professional 101 (EMP) course during this pandemic. I am really happy about what CIET is doing now. You guys are impacting so many young professionals like me.

Leo Glaser, Energy Analyst – Operational Excellence, Quadreal Property Group

In our experience, CIET courses deliver a great foundation for all energy professionals—at any stage of their career or experience level. We were very satisfied with the facilitation and received positive feedback from QuadReal participants. It is a pleasure to work with CIET.

Aaron Wouters, Energy Manager – Trillium Health Partners

CIET provides the BEST example of how program certification information should be provided. Its personal, with dates relevant to me and my timelines, and also communicates future events.

Jeff Quint, Manager, Customer Solutions & Communications - Enova Power

The Becoming Carbon Neutral course helped frame the opportunities and challenges our customers and our own organization are going to face in becoming carbon neutral. It has served as a foundation, enabling our teams to better support our customers as they move through the process and be part of the solution.
