Program overview

The Certified Building Commissioning Professional (CBCP) course presents all phases of commissioning projects and current best practices to ultimately prepare participants to take the exam and earn the CBCP designation.

At its core, building commissioning involves quality focused projects that serve to provide documented confirmation that building systems function as intended (based on both design and operational criteria), thereby meeting the operational requirements of owners. Projects of this nature have proven to be important because buildings that operate suboptimally tend to have poor indoor air quality and comfort, consume higher levels of energy, and lead to equipment failures. Properly commissioned buildings typically have fewer change orders, tend to be more energy efficient, and have lower operation and maintenance costs. Additionally, commissioning serves to restore existing buildings to a state of high productivity through the implementation of renovations, upgrades, and tune-ups of existing systems.

The trainer leads you through an examination of all aspects of building commissioning by looking at dozens of case studies from successfully completed projects in hospitals, data centres, airports, university campuses, school districts, commercial buildings, and more. Participants are also encouraged to produce real-world examples of their own through class dialogue and a few interactive exercises.

What you will learn

  • Recognize the optimal timing and context for a commissioning project.
  • Define all phases of the commissioning process:
    • Pre-design phase
    • Design phase
    • Construction phase
    • Occupancy phase
  • Apply best practices to various building types.
  • Connect commissioning with other standards and design frameworks.
  • Delimit the scope and use of existing building commissioning (EBCx).
  • Recognize the impacts of commissioning projects on building systems as well as operation and maintenance activities.

This course is ideal for

  • Engineers
  • Energy managers
  • Building owners and managers
  • Commissioning professionals and agents
  • Project managers
  • Building designers

Frequently Asked Questions

How do AEE virtual exams work? (CEM, CEA, CBCP, CMVP)

STEP ONE: REGISTER AND SCHEDULE THE EXAM

Registration for an AEE exam can be made while registering for an AEE course or through our AEE Exam Retake cohorts. All virtual exams are taken through the Proctor U platform. Once you have registered and paid the rewrite/exam only fee, your name will be forwarded to AEE and Proctor U.

You should receive an email from noreply@proctoru.com 3 to 5 days before the session starts. This email will contain a link for you to schedule your four-hour remote exam on their platform. Please make sure you check your junk inbox or quarantine folder for the email; if you still cannot find it once the course or the exam retake cohort has started, you must notify us at support@cietcanada.com and request for the email to be resent to you.

Should you wish to reschedule your exam under the same cohort, you may do so through the same link provided by Proctor U; however, to modify an exam that is already scheduled, you need to do so at least 24h before the existing time slot.

You will need to schedule your exam at least 72 hours ahead of desired exam time to avoid premium fees charged directly to you by Proctor U. Exams scheduled less than 72 hours from their desired exam time will be charged a premium scheduling fee.

Candidates are unable to schedule their exams less than 24 hours from the desired exam time.

STEP TWO: BE FAMILIARIZED WITH THE PROCTOR U PLATFORM

To ensure a smooth exam process, it is crutial to read all Proctor U remote proctoring procedures (especially the Proctor U Guidelines) below:

  • ProctorU Guidelines for more information about the exam and for the detailed AEE exam rules.
  • Disable remote access software and/or virtual machines (ex. Team Viewer, SplashTop, AnyDesk) prior to starting the exam.
  • Review the onboarding process and what to expect during your exam with this video.
  • This document contains step-bystep instructions that show the invite and scheduling process.
  • Sample emails that candidates can expect to receive from Proctor U are shown here.

STEP THREE: AFTER THE EXAM

You will receive a letter from CIET via email within 60 days of completion of the exam that will include the OFFICIAL test score. Please do not contact CIET or AEE about your test results before the end of the 60-day period. Exam results are not available on CIET’s or AEE’s website.

What are the steps for AEE certification process?

STEP ONE: REGISTER FOR THE COURSE AND EXAM

All candidates seeking an AEE certification (CEM, CMVP, CEA or CBCP) must complete the designated course, pass the exam, and meet the eligibility criteriaYou can find all upcoming AEE courses in our CIET calendar here.

STEP TWO: COMPLETE YOUR CERTIFICATION APPLICATION

  • After registering for the course, you'll receive a Registration Confirmation email. Please check your spam folder if you don't see it in your inbox. That email will contain a link to access our Certification Platform where you will be able to fill out the certification application form. Once you complete the form, please click on Save and then Submit for us to receive it.
  • This form is a requirement for all participants taking an AEE exam.
  • Your completed application must be received at least five days prior to the start date of your course or exam retake cohort to avoid delays in your certification process.
  • All collected forms will be sent to our Local Board and AEE to be reviewed. If you obtain a passing score in your exam and you meet the eligibility criteria, you'll be granted the AEE certification (CEM, CBCP, CMVP or CEA).

STEP THREE: SCHEDULE YOUR EXAM

  • The open book exam will be administered remotely if you attended a real-time virtual course and in-person if you attended an in-person course.
  • For the in-person exam, this will be administered on the last day of the course at that same location.
  • For the remote exam, you will have two weeks to schedule your exam with Proctor U after finishing the course. You will receive all instructions the week prior to the course. Please wait to receive your official Proctor U invitation email in order to book your exam date and time. To learn more about what to expect from your Proctor U remote exam please click here.
  • The official exam results will be sent to each participant by email within 60 days after the exam date. Please do not contact CIET or AEE before this deadline.

What does an AEE certification involve?

An AEE designation can be used with the name on organizational letterhead, business cards, and all forms of address. Certification is for individuals only. The CEM designation may not be used to imply that an organization or firm is certified.

What is the exam process?

The exam is conducted through remote proctoring, which involves taking an online exam using a personal computer while being monitored live by a Proctor via webcam and screen-sharing technology. The exam is open-book, and a calculator, ruler, book tabs, and a protractor are allowed.

If you wish to reschedule your exam for another cohort, you can do so using the same link provided by ProctorU; however, to modify an exam that is already scheduled, you must do so at least 24 hours before the initially chosen time. You will need to schedule your exam at least 72 hours ahead of the desired time to avoid additional fees charged directly by ProctorU.

If you want to postpone the exam to a different cohort, a fee of $150 plus taxes applies unless you provide medical proof.

Pierre-Francis Parent, Energy Efficiency and Sustainability Consultant - Planéco Énergie

My background in energy efficiency was primarily at the industrial process level, so I chose to train with CIET to expand my knowledge on building energy systems. I completed the Advanced Course on Existing Building Commissioning (EBCx) as well as the two courses on Building Automation Systems. The new concepts I learned, enhanced by the knowledge of the trainers and the other participants, quickly helped me identify opportunities relating to energy, comfort, and maintenance, most often "low cost" ones.
